आजादी !... शताब्दी की ओर

आक्रांताओं का मार्ग प्रशस्त किया, कुछ घर के भेदी,

शहीदों के मेले लग गए, जवानों ने दी बेहिसाब बलिवेदी।

नव-वधुओं के हाथों में, अभी सूखी भी नहीं थी मेहंदी,

उनके वर पहुंचे सरहद पर, वरण कर सेना की वर्दी।

रण-बांकुरों के शव इतने, सूनी हुई अनगिनत गोदी,

उन शवों के शोणित से, लोहित हुई, शुभ्र-हरित वादी।

उन बलिदानों को विस्मृत कर, हम निर्भय, सो रहे बेखुदी,

प्रणय-प्रफुल्लित हृदय से, परिजन संग निहार रहे कौमुदी ।

अष्ट दशक हो गये हैं, जबसे आयी है हाथ आजादी,

कष्ट बहुत झेले पुरखों ने ,और देखी बहुत बरबादी।

भ्रष्ट हो गया हमारा मन, चाहे ओढ़ें तन पर खादी,

नष्ट हो गयी देश-भक्ति, स्वार्थ में है सब उन्मादी।

अधीनता अवलोकन करने वाली, अवसित हो रही आबादी,

देश-अनहित अपराध कर हम,आप ही बन रहे फरियादी।

नौनिहालों को देश-प्रेम का, पुनः पाठ पढ़ायें नानी- दादी,

सब मिलकर पहुंचा दें, जन-गण तक यह पवित्र मुनादी।

English Translation

Freedom! Towards the Centenary

Some traitors from within Cleared the path for invading forces; Martyrs gathered in countless numbers, Our brave young men offered limitless sacrifices.

The henna on newlywed brides’ hands Had barely dried, When their husbands reached the borders, Choosing the army uniform as their wedding attire.

So many bodies of valiant warriors Left countless mothers’ laps empty; Their blood turned the valleys— Once white and green—crimson red.

Forgetting those sacrifices, We sleep fearlessly, lost in carefree comfort; With hearts filled with love and joy, We gaze at the moonlight with our families.

Eight decades have passed Since freedom came into our hands. Our ancestors endured immense suffering And witnessed unimaginable destruction.

Our minds have become corrupt, Even if we drape khadi around our bodies. Patriotism has faded away; Self-interest has driven everyone into frenzy.

The generation that witnessed subjugation Is slowly disappearing. By committing crimes against the nation’s interests, We ourselves have become the aggrieved petitioners.

Let our grandmothers and mothers Teach the little ones the lessons of patriotism once again. Let us all carry this sacred message To every citizen of the nation.
